EU Funding Opportunities

EU Funding Opportunities

Two main funding programmes address Language Technologies: Horizon 2020 (ICT Work Programme) and CEF- Connecting Europe Facility.

In Horizon 2020, language technologies were part of the "Big Data Value Chain" until Work Programme 2016/17. In the Horizon 2020 ICT Work Programme 2016/17, an introduction on page 5 refers to "Application of language technologies is supported under topic ICT-14, 15 and 16 (Big Data PPP)" and encourages the use of language technologies for human-to-human and human-to-machine interaction and communication. The 2017 call is currently open, deadline 25 April 2017.

Big Data Value Chain background documents and links for information are available:

Past event:
A big data PPP networking session took place on 26 September 2016 at the Proposers Day in Bratislava.

A new DG CNECT unit, "Learning, Multilingualism, and Accessibility" (Unit G.3) exists since 1 July 2016. A draft programme for Horizon 2020 Work Programme 2018/19 will include funding opportunities for language technologies under the heading: ICT-38-[2018]: A multilingual, inclusive Next Generation Internet.

Another potential opportunity is the CEF - Connecting Europe Facility, the targeted infrastructure programme at European level.  CEF Automated tranlsation (CEF.AT or eTranlsation) is helping European and national public administrations exchange information across language barriers in the EU. The CEF Work Programme 2017 foresees calls for CEF.AT - see pp.32 ff. The first call CEF-TC-2017-3  eTranslation will be opened on 28 June 2017.

Past calls:
A call for proposals (CEF-TC-2016-3) was opened on 20 September 2016 including Automated Translation with an indicative budget of 6.5 MEUR but closed in December 2016. All documents necessary for potential applicants can be found here. The presentation on Automated Translation by Aleksandra Wesolowska can be found here. Or you can watch the recorded webstream of the Virtual Info Day. Check out the FAQs. Member States contacts points (for obligatory agreement).
