EU Funding Opportunities

Two main funding programmes address Language Technologies: Horizon 2020 (ICT Work Programme) and CEF-Connecting Europe Facility.

The Horizon 2020 Work Programme for 2018-2020 contains a call for 2018 under the heading of ICT-29-2018 "A multilingual Next Generation Internet". The Call and final work programme was published end October 2017. It foresees to action lines: An Innovation Action for "A European Language Grid" (with a budget of 7 MEUR) and probably 6 projects for  Domain-specific/challenge-oriented Human Language Technology as Research & Innovation Actions, each in the estimated magnitude of MEUR 3. At the Proposers' Day in Budapest on 9/10 November, the Networking Session on "A multlingual Next Generation Internet" provided more information and a platform for elevator pitches for proposal ideas. Deadline for proposal submission is 17 April 2018.

CEF - Connecting Europe Facility, the targeted infrastructure programme at European level, provides opportunities through its CEF Automated tranlsation (CEF.AT or eTranlsation) that is helping European and national public administrations exchange information across language barriers in the EU.

The  call CEF-TC-2017-3  eTranslation opened on 28 June 2017 with a deadline of 28 November 2017. A virtual Info Day was held on 12 September 2017.

PAST CEF CALLS:
A call for proposals (CEF-TC-2016-3) was opened on 20 September 2016 including Automated Translation with an indicative budget of 6.5 MEUR but closed in December 2016. PAST H2020 CALLS (from Big Data Unit):
In Horizon 2020, language technologies were part of the "Big Data Value Chain" until Work Programme 2016/17. In the Horizon 2020 ICT Work Programme 2016/17, an introduction on page 5 refers to "Application of language technologies is supported under topic ICT-14, 15 and 16 (Big Data PPP)" and encourages the use of language technologies for human-to-human and human-to-machine interaction and communication. The 2017 call closed on 25 April 2017.
